What is Benchmarking?

To implement benchmarking is to continuously compare the enterprise’s major operational processes against those of the leading or excellent enterprises in the same or different industry. By learning from others’ strengths and discovering ways of improvement, the enterprise could also become a leading or excellent one herself.

Benchmarking is applicable to all departments in different industries seeking to continuously enhance their operational processes, such as marketing/sales, purchasing, production, maintenance, and customer service; educational, health service as well as governmental organizations can also implement benchmarking. Presently, many world-renowned enterprises, for example, AT&T, Xerox, IBM, Marks & Spencer and Motorola, etc., are benchmarking practitoners. In Hong Kong, among the major organizations implementing benchmarking are Mass Transit Railway Corporation, Kowloon-Canton Railway Corporation, Towngas, as well as Hsin Chong Real Estate Management Co.
