The effect of gilded edge
Embroidery is a traditional Chinese craft with a long history and rich cultural characteristics. It
possesses a unique sense of beauty paired with practicality. Guangdong embroidery is
especially renowned for its rich patterns, splendid colours and very decorative nature.
It is known as one of the four great embroideries of China and being classified as one of
China’s national intangible cultural heritage. In order to propagate the art culture
and traditional craft of Guangdong embroidery as well as to encourage Macao youths to
participate in Macao’s cultural and creative industry, CPTTM had organized a “Guangdong
Embroidery Workshop” on 31st May and 1st June. It aimed to introduce the impressive
history of Guangdong embroidery, artistic characteristics, fundamental knowledge and
different stitching methods to the public. Qu Tingnan of Southern China Fashion Museum,
Guangzhou T.I.T. Creative Park, was the instructor for the workshop. Qu taught students
how to frame the embroidery in a hoop, split the yarn, use of needles and various stitching
methods. His superb craftsmanship in Guangdong embroidery was a feat watched by
the students. Everyone learned a lot during the workshop.
