Guangzhou embroidery and Chaozhou embroidery are
collectively known as Guangdong embroidery. It is known
as one of the four great embroideries of China, being
classified as one of China’s national intangible cultural
heritage. Guangdong embroidery is known for its use of
many variations in stitching methods, tight and elaborate
patterns, brilliant mix of colours, and easily adaptable into
any kind of clothes. Guangdong embroidery has a long history
and requires high level of dexterity from the artists. The
finished patterns and layouts are always exquisite,
receiving praises and appreciation from its audiences.
Traditional Guangdong embroidery garments and shoes
were shown at the exhibition. Clothing ranged from civilian
wedding gowns to offerings made to the emperor during
late Qing Dynasty. Whether the embroidery was done on
pure silk or buttercup silk fabric, the brilliant colours, innovative
patterns, and unique stitching methods all demonstrated
the inimitable South China artistic flair. It is a perfect
manifestation of integrating traditional culture onto clothes
making. The exhibition allowed Macao fashion industry and
the public get a glimpse of the intricate art of Guangdong
embroidery, giving everyone an opportunity to closely
witness the unmistaken art of Guangdong embroidery and
the beauty of Chinese traditional arts and crafts.
