Having a sewing machine was a must for every household in the sixties of last century.
The social atmosphere is simpler during those times. Many proficient housekeeping
mothers used their craftsmanship to create or mend clothing for their husband or create
new dresses for their daughters. It is a tell-tale sign of a warm family.
By the eighties, textile and garment industry boomed in Macao. Sewing machines
became industrial tools, creating many business opportunities for Macao. As the society
prospered, sewing machines became witnesses of changing generations.
This year, Macao Fashion Gallery develops its “Exhibition on classic Sewing Machine”
in the form of a story house. Images of Macao textile and garment industry were
encapsulated and unfolded in front of the audiences. These classic memories allow
our young generation to better understand the living treasures of our forefathers while
learning more about the history of sewing machines.
